Zehnder HRV/ERV Cleaning

Your Zehnder ventilation system brings fresh, filtered air into your home while recovering heat from exhaust air. Over time, filters, cores, and valves collect dust and debris that restrict airflow and reduce efficiency. As a Zehnder-trained service provider, we clean and tune your system to restore proper ventilation, protect air quality, and keep your home comfortable year-round.

Zehnder HRV/ERV Cleaning

Expert Zehnder ERV/HRV Cleaning & Balanced Ventilation Tune-Up

Your Zehnder heat recovery (HRV) or energy recovery ventilator (ERV) quietly works all day to bring in fresh, filtered air while recovering heat from your exhaust air. Over time, dust, pollen, and fine debris accumulate in filters, cores, valves, and ducts—and that buildup can reduce airflow, efficiency, and indoor air quality.

As a Zehnder-trained service provider, we follow Zehnder’s recommended practices to clean, inspect, and tune your system so it continues to perform the way it was designed.

Our specialized Zehnder service combines thorough cleaning of the unit, core, filters, and valves with a performance-focused check of airflow and drainage to keep your balanced ventilation system running at its best.

We focus on the whole system: the central unit, the fresh air and exhaust air paths, and the distribution valves that deliver air to each room.

Why Zehnder Ventilation Maintenance Matters

Zehnder systems provide continuous, whole-house fresh air with heat recovery, making them a critical part of a tight, energy-efficient home. Over time, they face several common issues:

  • Clogged filters – Dust, pollen, pet hair, and outdoor pollution load up the filters, restricting airflow and making the fans work harder.
  • Dirty heat/energy recovery core – Fine dust on the core surfaces reduces heat transfer and can impair moisture control.
  • Contaminated supply and extract valves – Valves collect dust and film around the openings, changing airflow and balance.
  • Blocked exterior grilles and condensate drains – Leaves, lint, and debris can obstruct exterior terminations or drains, risking reduced performance, odors, and leaks.

Left untreated, these issues can:

  • Reduce ventilation rates and degrade indoor air quality
  • Increase fan energy use and operating noise
  • Throw off the balance between supply and exhaust
  • Lead to condensation issues, odors, or nuisance alarms

What We Do: Full Zehnder System Service

Our Zehnder service is designed to restore clean airflow through the unit and distribution system and verify the system is operating as intended.

A typical visit includes:

Unit & Filter Service

  • Safely powering down and opening the unit
  • Removing, inspecting, and replacing filters (customer-supplied or our stock, as arranged)
  • Lightly vacuuming or wiping accessible dust from the interior compartment and filter tracks

Core & Housing Cleaning

  • Carefully removing the HRV/ERV core per Zehnder guidelines
  • Cleaning the core to remove accumulated dust and debris, then allowing it to drain and dry fully before reinstallation
  • Wiping down the core housing and interior surfaces to remove dust, cobwebs, and buildup
  • Cleaning of the blowers and their housings

Supply & Extract Valves

  • Inspecting supply and extract valves throughout the home
  • Carefully removing and cleaning visible dust and film on valve faces and nearby ceiling/wall surfaces
  • Reinstalling valves and returning them to their original settings to preserve designed airflow balance

(If we find valves that appear misadjusted or airflow that clearly seems out of balance, we’ll note it and recommend follow-up airflow testing/commissioning.)

Exterior Grilles & Condensate

  • Inspecting exterior intake and exhaust grilles for debris, insect nests, or damage
  • Clearing visible obstructions to help maintain proper airflow
  • Checking the condensate connection/line (where applicable) and clearing minor blockages to help prevent leaks and odors

Basic Settings & Function Check

  • Powering the unit back up and verifying normal operation from the controller
  • Confirming fan operation at low/normal/boost modes
  • Checking for abnormal noises, warning indicators, or error messages
  • Noting any obvious issues with settings and recommending follow-up with the installer if advanced adjustments or updates are needed

As a Zehnder-trained provider, we respect the original design, ductwork, and controls. We do not re-engineer the system or alter commissioning values. If we see signs that deeper commissioning, software updates, or duct cleaning are needed, we document our findings and recommend follow-up with a Zehnder installer or ventilation specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers about maintenance, indoor air quality benefits, system efficiency, and more.

  • Do I Really Need an Annual Heat Pump Cleaning?

Absolutely. Annual cleaning is essential to maintain your heat pump’s efficiency, much like changing the oil in a car. Without yearly maintenance, your mini-split heat pump has to work harder to meet your heating and cooling needs, causing increased wear and raising the risk of breakdowns. Regular maintenance helps prevent costly repairs and keeps your system performing at its best.

  • Will a Cleaning Fix the Problem with My System?

If your heat pump isn’t working correctly, or you’ve noticed water pooling, mold, or strange odors, a thorough cleaning can often solve these issues. However, if your system won’t turn on or shows error messages, additional service may be necessary. Regular deep cleanings help prevent these problems, restoring efficiency and enhancing performance.

  • Will Your Service Improve My Allergies and Indoor Air Quality?

Yes! Mini-split heat pumps continuously circulate air over the heat exchange coil, naturally gathering dust, mold, pollen, and other allergens. Our annual deep cleaning removes these contaminants, enhancing indoor air quality by preventing pollutants from recirculating in your home. Without this cleaning, the system can worsen indoor air by spreading these allergens.

  • I Clean My Filter Twice a Year; Isn’t That Enough?

No, it’s not enough. While cleaning your filter is important, it only addresses part of your system’s maintenance needs. Dust, mold, and debris also build up on internal components—such as coils, fans, and blower wheels—that filter cleaning doesn’t reach. Over time, this buildup restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and can lead to costly repairs. A professional deep cleaning annually removes these hidden contaminants, keeping your heat pump operating safely, efficiently, and for a longer lifespan.

  • Do You Ever Subcontract Your Services?

No, we don’t subcontract our work. Every technician is directly trained and employed by us, ensuring consistent quality in every job. However, we do partner with installers who prefer not to handle maintenance themselves, providing our professional service as their maintenance partner. We uphold the same high standards and expertise in these partnerships, ensuring exceptional care for all our clients.
